MassUltra Roundup: Jemez Mountain and Tillamook Burn

The May 10-11 weekend saw a handful of ultras across New England as runners endured sloppy, soggy conditions from Massachusetts to Maine. Even with all of the local action, several runners from the region scattered throughout the country to race, and we’re catching up on their results with a few region-based roundups. We start in the West, where New Englanders secured hard-earned finishes at the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs in New Mexico and Tillamook Burn in Oregon.

Results: TARC Wapack and Back Trail Races

The 17th edition of the Trail Animals Running Club’s Wapack and Back Trail Races took place Saturday, May 10, 2025, in Ashburnham, Mass. Runners took on either a 43-mile out-and-back of the Wapack Trail, a 50-mile race that included the 43-mile out-and-back plus an additional 7 miles, or a 21.5-mile one-way journey through the course. Since its founding in 2007 by Bogie Dumitrescu, the event has been held annually with the exception of 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s event was quite possibly the wettest Wapack and Back on record.

MassUltra Roundup: White Lake Ultras, Forgotten Forest, and the Blue 2 Blue Challenge

The first weekend of May saw a trio of ultras play out in New England, with several record-breaking performances in New Hampshire at the White Lake Ultras, and big performances at the Forgotten Forest 9-Hour Ultra and the Blue 2 Blue Challenge 50K in Connecticut. MassUltra Roundup: Trails to the Sky, McDonald Forest, Salt Flats, Grayson Highlands, and Strolling Jim

May kicked off with a jam-packed slate of ultramarathons in New England, including two in Connecticut – the Forgotten Forest 9-Hour and the Blue 2 Blue Challenge, as well as the White Lake Ultras in New Hampshire. We’ll have those ultras covered in Part II of this week’s roundup, but here in Part I we look beyond New England and catch up on how runners from the region performed at other ultras throughout the country, from New Jersey to Oregon and points in between.

Resilient Runners Endure Hottest DRB Ever

MILTON, Mass. – Sweat poured down Ethan Sokol’s face and soaked the light blue shirt beneath his hydration vest as he trotted into the aid station 13 miles into his adventure. A wardrobe change made little difference; the orange shirt he swapped into ultimately suffered a similar soggy fate.

Results: TARC Spring Classic

The Trail Animals Running Club played host to the 13th edition of the TARC Spring Classic 50K, marathon, half marathon and 10K trail races, as well as the inaugural free youth fun run, on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Jericho Woods in Weston, Mass. In typical Spring Classic fashion, the crowd of 346 runners endured rain and soggy trails for much of the day.
