MassUltra Roundup: Jemez Mountain and Tillamook Burn

The May 10-11 weekend saw a handful of ultras across New England as runners endured sloppy, soggy conditions from Massachusetts to Maine. Even with all of the local action, several runners from the region scattered throughout the country to race, and we’re catching up on their results with a few region-based roundups. We start in the West, where New Englanders secured hard-earned finishes at the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs in New Mexico and Tillamook Burn in Oregon.

Jemez Mountain Trail Runs

Pamela Harght has a history with the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs. The race was her first ultra back in 2010 when she completed the 50K distance. She returned in 2015 and bumped up to the event’s 50-mile distance, before returning to run the 50K again in 2016.

After nine years away, Harght returned for another run at the 18th annual Jemez Mountain Trails Runs 50-mile and 50K ultras on Saturday, May 10, in Los Alamos, N.M.

Harght, 41, of Marshfield, Mass., was one of two New Englanders who took on the 50K distance this year. She and 54-year-old Adam Pinyoun of Stratham, N.H., both handled the technical trails, big climbs, and high altitude – including climbing to above 10,000 feet. Both were among the 181 finishers within 13 hours, with Pinyoun placing 81st in 7:57:14 and Harght 126th in 9:19:32.

Galen Hecht, 30, of Anchorage, Alaska, led all runners in 5:08:17 while top female Becca Bramley, 29, of Durango, Colo., placed ninth overall in 5:30:55.

No New Englanders were among the 56 finishers of the event’s 50-mile race.

Tillamook Burn

As he prepares to take on the Western States Endurance Run 100-miler next month, former Boston resident Joe McConaughy delivered a strong performance in a tune-up race at Tillamook Burn on May 10-11 at Tillamook State Forest in Oregon. Now living in his native Seattle, Wash., the 33-year-old McConaughy cruised on familiar Pacific Northwest singletrack, conquering the 50-mile distance and its 9,000 feet of climbing with ease. Ultimately, McConaughy posted the fifth-fastest time in course history and won the race in 6:56:08. His closest competitor was overall runner-up Jade Belzberg, 32, of Fort Langley, B.C., who set a new female course record with her 7:41:01 performance.

McConaughy was joined among the finishers by two current New England residents. Christopher Ekman, 47, of Boston, Mass., placed 31st out of 134 finishers in 9:47:57, while 41-year-old Grant Ritter of South Deerfield, Mass., was 83rd in 12:15:41.

No New England residents were among the 90 runners who completed the 50K race, led by 35-year-old Anthony Jacobs of Boise, Idaho, in 4:33:30. Tara Fraga, 32, of Issaquah, Wash., led the female field in 4:54:28 and placed ninth overall on the 31.8-mile course with 7,000 feet of climbing.
