In addition to the ultras in the Midwest and the West, New England ultrarunners were plenty busy racing throughout the region during the Nov. 8-10 weekend. Beast Coast Trail Running put on another epic Race for DFL in Massachusetts that will be featured in a separate story. Additionally, dozens of runners put up ultra mileage at the highly technical Bold Coast Bash in Maine and the paved Roxbury Marathon 50K in Connecticut. We have both of those events highlighted in this edition of the roundup.
Bold Coast Bash
Rugged and tough, the Bold Coast Bash returned for its sixth edition – and fourth edition of the 50K ultra – on Sunday, Nov. 10, in Cutler, Maine. Runners took on a figure eight-style loop course packed with mud, rocks and slick bog bridges, and ultrarunners had to complete it three times.
Both the men’s and women’s fields saw close battles at the front that came down to the final mile. In the men’s field, 37-year-old David Loome of Millinocket, Maine, fended off 26-year-old Jacob Oard of Bozeman, Mont., by less than 90 seconds with Loome winning in 6:54:17 and Oard following in 6:55:44. Jason Geroux, 39, of Orrington, Maine, was third in 7:15:14, followed by Erik Benham, 38, of Kennebunk, Maine, in 7:23:31.
In the women’s field, the frontrunners were separated by just 64 seconds and both broke the course record. Gillian Kramer, 29, of Gorham, Maine, earned the victory in 7:29:03 and Rachel Redfearn, 33, of South Portland, Maine, was second in 7:30:07. Fionna Kennedy, 23, of Bar Harbor, Maine, rounded out the podium in 8:10:21.
Of the 40 runners who started the 50K, 25 finished within 11 hours. Another 42 runners took part in the single-loop 10.5-mile fun run. Tim Fisher, 48, of Prospect Harbor, Maine, and Kate Ryan, 46, of Hope, Maine, were the fastest male and female finishers in 1:55:47 and 2:16:40, respectively.
Roxbury Marathon 50K
After 10 years offering a marathon as its longest distance, the Roxbury Marathon introduced a 50K ultra in 2023. The ultra option returned in 2024 at the 12th annual Roxbury Marathon and second annual 50K on Saturday, Nov. 9, in Roxbury, Conn.
Ultrarunners took on a paved course on roads and used a 13.5-mile loop followed by five laps of a 3.52-mile loop that packed plenty of hills. The smooth surface and fast footing made personal-best times possible for the distance. Eleven runners finished the 50K and all did so in less than 5:10.
Laena Romond, 42, of Brookfield, Conn., earned the overall win and topped the women’s field in 3:49:34. Men’s champion Danny Greenslade, 50, of the United Kingdom cruised in second overall in 4:02:35.
Jessica Crandall, 45, of Berlin, Conn., and Angela Scarinci, 42, of North Haven, Conn., completed the women’s podium in 4:24:44 and 4:47:31, respectively, while Adam Rissolo, 44, of New Milford, Conn., and Thy Hoang, 40, of Hartford, Conn., were the second- and third-place men in 4:33:01 and 4:35:53, respectively.
