Part I of our massive Sept. 18-22 ultrarunning weekend roundup focused on New Englanders’ successes in the Midwest and West. Here in Part II, we turn to the East Coast where runners turned in strong performances at races in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee and Georgia. Additionally, runners from the region also raced in Michigan, Wisconsin, Maryland and Virginia, though results from those events were unavailable at the time of publication.
Enchanted Forest Ultra
The eighth and final edition of the Enchanted Forest 6-Hour Ultra took place on Saturday, Sept. 21, in Stratford, Conn., and David Stawski closed it out with a big performance.
Stawski was one of 39 runners who took on the 2.3-mile loop course at the Roosevelt Forest, amassing 191 feet of gain per loop on the rolling hills and singletrack trails. Stawski entered the day with plenty of history on these trails, having won the Forgotten Forest 9-Hour Ultra at the Roosevelt Forest in April, followed by a 77.5-mile effort at the Centurion Ultra Trail Event this summer, also at the forest.
At the Enchanted Forest Ultra, Stawski hammered out 43.7 miles, earning the 43-year-old from Manchester, Conn., the second-best performance in event history and his second victory of the year at the Roosevelt Forest. Stawski will race one more time at the Roosevelt Forest this year when he races the Forbidden Forest 30-Hour Ultra in October.
Stawski was joined on the men’s podium by 28-year-old Joseph Edelstein and 29-year-old Gregory Smith of Newington, Conn., who finished second and third with 39.1 miles apiece. Jeffrey Schleppy, 47, of Stamford, Conn., was fourth with 34.5 miles, and 37-year-old Mark Edwards of Gallatin, Tenn., was fifth with 32.2 miles.
In the women’s field, 40-year-old Geraldine Pires of Fairfield, Conn., earned the victory with 29.9 miles in 5:37:53. Katie Flament, 39, of Bridgeport, Conn., matched the mileage but needed 2 1/2 minutes more to do so, finishing second in 5:40:10. Liz Burns, 31, of Groton, Conn., was third, also with 29.9 miles in 5:53:04.
Angevine Farm Trail Festival 50K
The Angevine Farm Trail Festival returned for its sixth edition on Sunday, Sept. 22, in Warren, Conn. The event once again offered a variety of distances, including its half marathon main event. Additionally, it once again included a 50K ultramarathon on a two-loop course.
Ten runners finished the 50K within 10 hours, led by 50-year-old Zandy Mangold of Brooklyn, N.Y., in 5:38:13. Kyle Surprenant, 33, of Coventry, Conn., followed five minutes later in 5:43:10, and 35-year-old Robert Wheeler of Marshfield, Mass., rounded out the podium in 5:59:41. Brian Coppola, 24, of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., and Jeffrey Uzzel, 39, of Easthampton, Mass., completed the top five in 7:06:15 and 7:43:42, respectively.
Sleigh Me 24- and 48-Hour Ultra
Results from the Sleigh Me 24- and 48-hour Ultra are not yet available, but at least one New Englander earned a 100-mile belt buckle for his effort on Sept. 20-22 in Shortsville, N.Y. Benn Griffin – the ringleader of the Berkshire Ultra Running Community for Service – just closed out another BURCS season of race directing, and the 38-year-old from Pittsfield, Mass., threw down a 101-mile effort on the 1-mile loop course through the Shortsville Reindeer Farm.
Wild Goose Trail Festival
It was just two months ago that Alyssa Freeze finished her first 100-miler. She ran 100.7 miles, to be exact, at the Notchview Ultra in Windsor, Mass. Freeze didn’t wait long to earn her second 100-mile finish. Freez, 39, of Holden, Mass., did so at the third annual Wild Goose Trail Festival on Sept. 21-22 in Hewitt, N.J.
The multi-distance endurance festival took place on the trails of Wawayanda State Park, and Freeze and her fellow 100-mile runners had to complete multiple loops and more than 11,000 feet of climbing within the 36-hour time limit. She ultimately did so, finishing in 35:29:19. Forty-one runners finished the race, led by 41-year-old David Matthews of Warminster, Pa., who set a new men’s course record of 22:28:28. Sharlota Kay, 41, of Bronx, N.Y., was 11th overall and set a female course record with her 27:40:52 effort. Freeze was the lone New England resident among the 100-mile finishers.
Two New Englanders finished on the podium of the event’s 50K race. Sean Perry, 28, of Shrewsbury, Mass., was the men’s runner-up, and Shania Perry, 27, also of Shrewsbury, was the third-place female. In the men’s field, Brian Dorgan, 41, of Eastontown, N.J., won in 4:30:19, while Sean Perry followed in 4:48:45. In the women’s field, Lauren Longfield, 33, of Newton, N.J., won in 4:57:18 while Shania Perry rounded out the podium in 6:11:37. In addition to the Perrys, New Englanders Cherie Bilbie, 49, of Ellington, Conn., and JR Johnson-Roehr, 57, of Attleboro, Mass., also were among the finishers. Bilbie finished in 7:18:54 and Johnson-Roehr completed the race in 11:03:35.
In the 50-mile race, 36-year-old Storm Beck of Hooksett, N.H., was the lone New Englander in the field, finishing 17th out of 46 runners in 14:18:18. Jeremy Tilley, 46, of Atoka, Tenn., led the way in 9:46:04 and Eve Campeaux, 58, of Bedminster, N.J., was the runner-up and first-place female in 9:53:16.
Additionally, 16 runners completed the 100K race; no New England residents were among the competitors at that distance.
Barkley Fall Classic
The Barkley Fall Classic 50K attempts to give runners a taste of the brutality of the notorious Barkley Marathons course, and a trio of New England residents who’ve finished the Fall Classic returned for more fun – and pain – at the 10th edition of the event on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Frozen Head State Park in Wartburg, Tenn.
Bill Tidd, 61, of Alton Bay, N.H., finished 23rd overall in 11:22:02 for his second finish of the event. Meanwhile, 53-year-old Jay Doubman of Winchester, Mass., became a three-time finisher and 36-year-old Melissa De Fabrizio of Stratford, Conn., became a four-time finisher as Doubman completed the race in 12:44:11 and De Fabrizio in 13:16:21.
Ninety-five runners finished the race within 13 1/2 hours, and the male and female winners were guaranteed a spot in the Barkley Marathons in spring 2025. Those honors went to Tim Landy, 38, of Exeter, UK, and Christina Rugloski, 27, of Denver, Colo., who topped the men’s and women’s fields and went 1-2 overall in 9:06:29 and 9:32:09.
The Big 50
James Flink earned his first ultramarathon finish at the eighth annual Big 50 on Saturday, Sept. 21, in Pine Mountain, Ga. Flink, 23, of Fairfield, Conn., took on the rocky, rooty singletrack tails of Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park, along with 29 other starters of the 50K race. Of that group, 22 finished within 11 hours. Flink placed seventh overall in 7:59:32. Casey Delong, 24, of Pace, Fla., earned the victory in 6:24:03.
Georgia Jewel
Duncan Naylor completed his first 100-mile race in January at the Shippey 100 in Missouri. The 19-year-old from Newton, Mass., earned his second 100-mile finish of the year at the 14th annual Georgia Jewel 100 on Sept. 21-22 in Dalton, Ga. The event used an out-and-back course on the Dry Creek Trail System that started and finished at the Dalton Convention Center. Ninety runners started the race, and just 40 finished within 35 hours. Naylor placed 22nd in 30:58:19. James Ebert, 37, of Huntsville, Ala., won the race in 22:03:30.
Another 72 runners completed the event’s 50-mile race. None were New England residents.
