MassUltra Roundup: Bronze Dragonfly, Grind On the Grid, and Thelma & Louise

The busy April 27-28 weekend merited a two-roundup recap to catch up on all the action of New England ultrarunners. After highlighting results from the greater Northeast in the first part, here in part two we have results from the rest of the country, highlighted by Connecticut resident Caitlin Rossi’s 101-mile effort in Georgia and Massachusetts resident Bill Wells’ top-10 showing at the Grind on the Grid Backyard Ultra in Indiana.

Bronze Dragonfly

Only one New England resident took part in the third annual Bronze Dragonfly Ultras on April 27-28 in Savannah, Ga., but she had a big weekend of running. The event offered time-based ultras of 30 hours, 24 hours, 12 hours day and night races, and 6 hours. Caitlin Rossi represented the region in the 30-hour race, which took place on a 1.4-mile USATF-certified course consisting of pavement and rubberized track at Lake Mayer. Rossi was one of 41 runners who took on the 30-hour race. Twelve runners achieved 100 miles or more, including Rossi, 41, of Torrington, Conn. who tied for sixth overall with 101.16 miles. It was at least the 11th time Rossi has completed 100 miles or more at a race.

Chad Schwendemann, 46, of Seven Fields, Pa., led all runners with 112.40 miles, followed by top female Kristen Weitz, 30, of Rock Spring Ga., and second-place male Dennison Hiller, 32, of Savannah, Ga., with 105.37 miles apiece.

Grind on the Grid Backyard Ultra

Among a slew of runners from Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Pennsylvania, one New England resident joined in on the action at the third annual Grind on the Grid Backyard Ultra on April 27-28 in Veedersburg, Ind.

Fifty-eight runners took part in the event with 40 achieving ultramarathon mileage. Twenty-four runners completed at least 50 miles, and the top seven all ran 100 miles or more. Bill Wells, 55, of Wilbraham, Mass., wasn’t the last runner standing – that honor went to 59-year-old Garrett Carolus of Leesburg, Ind., who logged 120.83 miles – but he did deliver a top-10 performance. Wells tied for eighth with 83.33 miles.

Wells previously won the Peoples’ Park Ultra Last Person Standing race in New Jersey in April 2023, followed by a victory in the 24-hour race at the Hamsterwheel in New Hampshire with his 100-mile performance.

Thelma & Louise 50K

There was plenty of fast running at the second edition of the Thelma & Louise 50K on Saturday, April 27, in Moab, Utah. Several finishers broke the course record at the women-only event in Moab’s Behind the Rocks Wilderness Area.

Of the 42 runners who finished the race within 9 1/2 hours, the top eight finishers all broke the course record and Jenna McCaffrey, 25, of Longmont, Colo., earned the victory in 4:31:21. Hannah Jochem, 32, of Lander, Wyo., and Karyn Sorenson, 29, of Missoula, Mont., joined her in breaking the 5-hour mark, finishing in 4:37:46 and 4:58:01, respectively. One New England resident was among the field, and she also had a strong day of running. Erin Magoon, 45, of Craftsbury Common, Vt., finished 14th overall in 6:05:18.
