MassUltra Roundup: Ray Miller, Anza Borrego Cuyamaca, and San Joaquin River Trail

The first weekend of December saw ultrarunners from New England go global, with two runners from Massachusetts taking on the IAU 24-Hour World Championships in Taiwan, while many others toed starting lines throughout the United States. We featured several of those events from the Dec. 1-2 weekend in a separate roundup, but this one catches up with the New England residents who tackled three separate courses in California. Welcome to the West Coast in this edition of the roundup.

Ray Miller 50/50

A pair of New England residents headed west to California to take part in the 11th edition of the Ray Miller 50/50 on Saturday, Dec. 2, in Malibu, Calif.

Eighty-eight runners finished the event’s 50-miler; none were New England residents. Another 118 runners finished the 50K, including 50-year-old Aliza Mon of Quincy, Mass., and 52-year-old Scott Motyka of Cumberland, R.I. Both handled the big climbs and enjoyed the big coastal views while racing on the trails of Point Mugu State Park. Mon finished 58th overall in 7:30:35 while Motyka followed in 7:45:17, good for 65th place out of 118 finishers. Jonathan Metcalfe, 41, of Harare, Zimbabwe, led all runners in 4:13:46 while Kelly Motyka, 49, of Long Beach, Calif., was the first-place female and sixth overall finisher in 5:34:34.

Anza Borrego Cuyamaca 50

The course record fell at the fourth edition of the Anza Borrego Cuyamaca 50-miler on Saturday, Dec. 2, in Julian, Calif., but the day was notable for two Connecticut ultrarunners for a different reason. One made it his first ultra while the other ran his first 50-miler.

Robert Eikel, 47, of West Hartford, Conn., battled to a 14:28:32 finish in his inaugural ultramarathon. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Cael Dimascio of Simsbury, Conn., conquered his second ultra and first 50-miler in 10:53:01, good for 33rd place overall out of 128 finishers within 14 1/2 hours.

Michael Dominguez, 40, of San Diego, Calif., earned the overall win and set a new men’s course record in 7:07:04, outdistancing his closest competitor by more than 90 minutes on the point-to-point course that began at the Sunrise Trailhead in Julian and finished at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Isabelle Biase, 25, of San Francisco, Calif., topped the women’s field and placed 16th overall in 9:46:00.

San Joaquin River Trail Ultras

After running his first ultra in New England at the Midstate Massive Ultra-Trail 30-miler in October, Landon Weiss headed west for his second. Weiss, 30, of Quincy, Mass., added a tiny bit more distance when he ran the 50K race at the ninth edition of the San Joaquin River Trail 100K and 50K ultras on Saturday, Dec. 2, in Friant, Calif.

Weiss was the lone New England resident to take on either distance, and he handled the 5,500 feet of climbing just fine on his way to a 36th-place finish out of 87 runners in 7:03:39. Menso De Jong, 34, of Santa Barbara, Calif., led all runners in a course-record 4:31:22. Erin Spencer, 44, of Fresno, Calif., topped the women’s field in 5:55:29 and finished 12th overall.
