181 New Englanders Await WSER Lottery

Hopes may be high, but the odds will once again be stacked against entrants in the Western States Endurance Run’s lottery on Saturday, Dec. 2, as 9,389 runners from around the world vie for 250 of the race’s 369 spots. The remaining positions in the 2024 race field will go to those who placed in the top 10 in 2023, earned a Golden Ticket, or secured a spot in the field provided by a sponsor.

The 51st edition of the Western States Endurance Run – North America’s original 100-mile trail ultramarathon – will take place June 29-30 in Olympic Valley, Calif., and once again take runners on a 100.2-mile journey from Olympic Valley to the Placer High School track in Auburn, Calif.

More runners than ever will see their dreams dashed in this year’s lottery. The 9,389 lottery entrants is the largest by far since Western States first held a lottery in 2000. This year’s number exceeds the previous record of 7,169 lottery entrants, an increase of 2,230 applicants.

Real-time lottery results can be viewed here, starting at 11 a.m. Eastern.

Seventy runners are already in the 2024 race field, including one New Englander. Katie Schide of Gardiner, Maine, secured her spot with a runner-up finish at the 2023 race where she broke the previous women’s course record and trailed only Courtney Dauwalter’s record-setting effort.

Schide is the only New Englander guaranteed a spot in the field, another 181 runners from the region hope to have their names drawn in the lottery at Placer High School. Massachusetts has the most lottery entrants with 97, followed by Connecticut with 26, Vermont with 20, New Hampshire with 17, Rhode Island with 11 and Maine with 10.

Of the New Englanders in the lottery, three have waited the longest and have the best odds. Shaun Daylor, Russell Dresher, and Neil Feldman – all of Massachusetts – are in the lottery for the eighth straight year and have 128 tickets apiece, which is the second-highest tally of any runners. They are among the 70 seventh-year hopefuls and have a 61.638 percent chance of being selected, according to Western States’ lottery statistics. Just eight runners have waited longer – nine years – and their 256 tickets apiece give them the best odds of being selected at 85.356 percent.

Another 147 runners are in the lottery for the sixth straight year and have 64 tickets for a 38.033 percent chance of having their names selected. Joseph D’Alessio and Lance Doherty of Massachusetts, Eli Burakian and Peter Lawson of Vermont, and Bruce Dailey of Maine are among that group. First-year hopefuls with 1 ticket apiece have less than a 1 percent chance of being selected, and second-year hopefuls with 2 tickets apiece don’t fare much better with a 1.482 percent chance.
