Thanksgiving weekend was primarily reserved for turkey trots and limited ultramarathon racing, but one New England resident found his way to the start of an ultra. Michael Pereiro of Shelton, Conn., took on the Fountain City 5 50K in Georgia for the second straight year and had another speedy performance. He gets this edition of the roundup all to himself.
Fountain City 5
Michael Pereiro’s bid for a title defense came up a little bit short at the Fountain City 5 50K on Sunday, Nov. 26, in Columbus, Ga., but it wasn’t for a lack of effort. Pereiro, 28, of Shelton, Conn., won the 2022 race in 4:31:22 with what at the time was the second-fastest time in event history. This year, he ran six minutes faster, finishing in 4:25:22, but placed second overall behind 46-year-old Alex Rivera of Phenix City, Ala., whose winning time of 4:13:09 now ranks second in the event’s five-year history. Pereira owns the third- and fourth-fastest times ever at the race.
Cheyenne Greenside, 27, of Columbus, Ga., finished third overall and first in the women’s field in 5:16:40. Nine runners finished the race, which took place on a 5K loop along the Columbus Riverwalk and the Chattahoochee River.
